100,000 Trees Planted to Support Textbook Affordability
Nebraska Book Company and National Arbor Day Foundation
Dedicate Forest in the Greater Yellowstone Region

Lincoln, Nebr.

Nebraska Book Company, working in partnership with the National Arbor Day Foundation, announced the dedication of a forest in the Greater Yellowstone region by planting 100,000 trees.

Last fall, Nebraska Book Company announced a unique partnership with the National Arbor Day Foundation to plant 100,000 trees in the Greater Yellowstone Region for all used textbooks bought or sold this year. The company has met its goal and will now dedicate the forest as a way to thank students for their commitment to buying used textbooks and participating in buyback by selling their books back to the bookstore.

Barry S. Major, Chief Operating Officer, Nebraska Book Company, said: "Nebraska Book Company has long been an advocate of recycling textbooks with their used textbook program. Buying used textbooks and selling them back to the bookstore is one simple way for students to reduce the cost of textbooks while also supporting recycling and the environment – it’s a good way to spare trees and help students. This year, we wanted to see if we could have a greater impact, see what else we could do… and so we built a forest!"

Throughout the school year, Nebraska Book Company donated a portion of each transaction that included a used textbook to The National Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees. "The ‘Buy a Book, Build a Forest’ campaign was a fun way to involve college students in planting trees and improving the environment," said John Rosenow, president of The National Arbor Day Foundation. "The trees planted by Nebraska Book Company will greatly benefit the Greater Yellowstone region by adding beauty and wildlife habitat, cleaning the air, preventing soil erosion, and protecting waterways. Congratulations to Nebraska Book Company and their customers for helping create a greener and healthier planet."

The "Buy a Book, Build a Forest" campaign began in August and runs though May. Major added: "The program was so successful that we met our goal ahead of schedule. That showcased the commitment of college students to helping the environment and the value students find in purchasing used textbooks. We’d also like to thank faculty members for their role in the process. With faculty turning in their textbook requirements to the bookstore prior to the end of the term, we’ve been able to pay students more at the buyback counter and increase the supply of used textbooks."

More than 100 Nebraska Book Company bookstores participated in the campaign.
