More Than 600 Tickets Donated for Veterans to Attend Saturday’s Football Game Through "Tickets for Veterans" Program

Veterans Whose Ticket Requests Could Not Be Fulfilled to Receive Gift From The Nebraska Bookstore

Through the generosity of many Husker football ticket holders, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln student-athletes and corporations, the Nebraska Bookstore is pleased to announce that more than 600 tickets were donated for veterans (and one guest) to attend Saturday's Nebraska vs. Kansas State game at Memorial Stadium through its "Tickets for Veterans" program.

"This weekend marks the 75th anniversary of Veteran's Day, we can’t thank enough those who donated their tickets in celebration and support of all the sacrifices veterans have made, and continue to make on our behalf," says Barry Major, chief operating officer of Nebraska Book Company. "While this is a small way to thank our veterans, we hope the message of our appreciation is as loud as a fan-filled Memorial Stadium – and then some," says Major.

To kick-off the campaign in September, The Nebraska Bookstore donated 100 tickets to the program. Since then, 166 donors followed suit with ticket donations. In all, a total of 1189 veterans registered for tickets, bringing the total number of ticket requests to 2354. Each veteran who registered, but did not win a ticket will receive a T-shirt from the Nebraska Bookstore.

"The response we had was tremendous," says Major. "The backbone of the football program is our fan base and once again they stepped up big time. Businesses also helped out with not only ticket donations, but asked if they could contribute in other ways as well."

For example, Major says Executive Travel of Lincoln included a story about the "Tickets for Veterans" program in its weekly newsletter that generated interest. Omaha Steaks jumped at the chance to feed the veterans on game day and American National Bank of Omaha and Russell Athletics joined to sponsor Nebraska Bookstore's t-shirt gift. In addition, Major says UNL student-athletes from many sports contributed over 100 tickets to the program.

"All of these efforts truly underscore the spirit behind this celebration," says Major. "Their contributions and desire to make this program as successful as possible is sincerely appreciated."

Veterans attending Saturday's game will also receive:

  • A pre-game luncheon for veterans to attend in the Nebraska Bookstore tent at the Husker Nation Pavilions
  • A 50% discount on all merchandise at the store on game day
