News Nebraska Bookstore Kicks Off Its "Tickets for Veterans" Program September 29th, 2005 The Nebraska Bookstore today kicked off its "Tickets for Veterans" program, an opportunity for Nebraska football ticket holders to donate their tickets to Nebraska veterans for the Nebraska vs. Kansas State game on November 12th. The program is in celebration of the upcoming 75th anniversary of Veteran's Day. "Many of us have family, friends and co-workers who are veterans or know a veteran," said Barry Major, chief operating officer of Nebraska Book Company. "Needless to say, we owe these men and women a great deal. With 160,000 veterans in Nebraska, several with ties to our company, we feel 'Tickets for Veterans' is one small way we can collectively say 'thank you' to those who have, and continue, to serve our country," said Major. The "Tickets for Veterans" program includes the following:
In addition, The Nebraska Bookstore will match the first 100 tickets that are donated. Corine Stucker, a wife and mom of veterans, and Nebraska Book Company employee, says she will be forever grateful for the support she received from her employer and is honored to be part of a larger effort in thanking Nebraska veterans. "The "Tickets for Veterans" program will mean a lot to veterans," said Stucker. "With both my husband and son serving in the military, there were definitely some trying times,” said Stucker. "But, one thing that did not change during this time was their love of Husker football. This program is a great way for Husker fans to show a very simple, yet sincere gesture of appreciation, gratitude and pride that’s sure to be felt by all," said Stucker. Lieutenant Col Alex Ford of the United States Marine Corps Reserve, a UNL graduate and former Husker Yell Squad Member says the “Tickets for Veterans" program may serve as a catalyst for others to get involved. "I believe many people respect and have a desire to assist these young veterans but may not have the knowledge or system to help," says Ford. Serving in the U.S. Marines and going to UNL is a family affair for the Fords. Alex’s brother, Travis, was a Captain in the Marine Corps, graduate of UNL and also a former Husker Yell Squad Member. Tragically, Travis died in April 2003 after his Cobra Helicopter supporting ground troops crashed 30 miles southeast of Baghdad. "Many people do not fully grasp the efforts our veterans provide to the security and freedoms that we enjoy on a daily basis. If there is any way that I can participate to recognize their efforts and support them, I will do it in a heartbeat," says Ford. Ticket donors and veterans who are interested in taking part in the program can donate or register in several ways:
"We are very excited to kick off this program," said Major. "Nebraskans are very generous and we're optimistic ticket holders will continue in that spirit by giving a veteran their stadium seat on November 12th." |
